My favourite finance related aussie podcasts

I’m the kind of person that will go through phases of audiobooks, podcasts and music when I’m listening to things. One of the best ways to consume and learn financial knowledge is via podcasts and I’ve spent so many hours listening to some amazing Australian produced ones so I’d like to share which ones are my favourites in no particular order.

Your wealth with Gemma Dale

A fortnightly released podcast, I’ve really enjoyed the bulk of guest speakers that Gemma has on this podcast. While not exactly FIRE based as it’s more based on stock picking etc, the macro side and point of views of the subjects the covered are very informative and also love how it’s not too technical so don’t really need to be a guru to follow along. Great guest speakers and relevant topics always make this one enjoyable for me as I am super interested in finance in general.

Chanticleer

If you’ve ever picked up a copy of the Fin Review the chances are that you’ve read the back page column called the “Chanticleer”. For those wondering, a chanticleer basically is a rooster or cock depending on who you ask! Hosted by James Thomson and Tony Boyd, they cover a lot of the current goings on in Australian finance and politics.

The Money Café

A podcast hosted by Alan Kohler from the ABC finance report usually hosted in a Café of some sort with another guest, this one is more of a laid back kind of listen. Often accompanied by James Thomson (same as above) or Stephen Mayne, these guys are a great listen as they tell things how they are however sometimes they go off on political tangents which sometimes loses my interest. They also do a question segment at the end of each podcast which is good!

Fire and chill

There are only two podcast producers that I’ve gone back and listened to podcasts twice and this is one of them. Hosted by Dave from Strong Money Australia and Pat from Life Long Shuffle, this is one of my favourite ones. I’ve been re-listening to some of the podcasts these guys released while I’ve been building things and I often find myself laughing along at some of the things these guys say. You can really tell these guys are good mates just by the chemistry of the podcast so I really love what they produced and was super sad they stopped making content due to ASICs crack down!

Aussie Fire Bug

This wouldn’t be Aussie fire podcast list without the fire bug! Probably the most prolific podcaster in the Australian fire space and I think I’ve listened to all of his podcasts at least twice. Recently I’ve been doing a lot of construction work and have started listening to the first podcasts again and it’s funny to go back and listen to how far Matt’s podcasts have come in terms of quality. Since the ASIC rules the newer segments have been less finance related but also still really interesting. Two of my favourites recently have been the Walkable City with Jeff Speck and the the one with Steve McKnight. Even though I have zero interest in investing in residential property, I really enjoyed the second half of this podcast where Steve really goes into a more philosophical tangent of life and finances which was great.

How I made it

A podcast interviewing members of the Australian Financial Review rich list. It’s filled with great stories and commentary from leaders, business owners and entrepreneurs from every walk of life. I love hearing these kind of stories, how they start from scratch, almost lose it all, overcome great adversity to end up in the top percentile. I often notice I recognize the businesses or products but not the owners and have no idea the story behind the brands. I really enjoyed the episode on Spud Turner who started Flight Centre.

Australian Finance Podcast

Hosted by Owen Rask from Rask Media and Kate Campbell from How To Money, this one is one I’d recommend to the new investors more so than people well on their way too financial independence. They have loads of great content teaching basic principles and concepts about finance in Australia but my only gripe is they push their own products a bit too much. I mean I get it the guy is trying to run a business so the podcast is basically just an advertisement for that so if you can zone out the self promotion they usually have great guest speakers and valuable content and topics that they are talking about.

That’s it folks, these are the best Australian financial independence podcasts I’ve subscribed to and listen to most if not all the episodes regularly. Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below or if I’ve missed any good ones!
